The house I grew up in had cream-colored Venetian blinds. I remember I could never get all the dust off of them. They were made of metal. I didn?t know any other kind of blinds back then, but since I?ve had my own home to decorate, I?ve looked at dozens of different styles of blinds made of many different materials, including various kinds of cloth, wood, metal and bamboo. They also come in horizontal and vertical designs with different ways of being raised and lowered. Some have wide slats and some are the very popular mini-blinds.
When choosing your blinds, think about the style of the whole room. How much light do you want? How much privacy? What colors will look good with the furniture, floors and walls? It sounds like a lot, and yes, there are dozens and dozens of choices, but with a little thought you can narrow it down and a little imagination will spice up the room. If you?re also putting up curtains, you may not care so much about the blinds as you will if the blinds will be the only window covering. Do you want solid blinds with a print curtain? Or a print on the blinds with a solid curtain? That?s a little more rare, but you can do it. What colors will go together? Do you want a blue in the blinds to bring out the blue in the curtains or the walls? Sometimes you just want to keep it simple and use a vertical pleated canvas blind. I?ve seen some really elegant rooms done that way. The blinds don?t detract from the rest of the room, so you can display large plants, impressive sculptures and art and trust that is where the eye will be drawn, not to the shades. If you?re like me, you may want some professional help to get the look you have in mind. You can search for blinds on the web or maybe even hire an interior designer to give you professional tips. Either way, be sure to have some fun choosing your blinds! |
